In the early 1970s, the family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where RuPaul attended the North Atlanta School of Performing Arts. She excelled in all aspects of performance, from dance and drama to chorus, enthralling audiences with her all-important charm and charisma. His teachers often commented on his infectious energy and great potential. This early performance helped him chart his own unique path in show business.
At the age of 15, RuPaul moved out and started living in his sister's apartment. It was a bold move and just the beginning of many tough decisions that would propel him toward his dream. It was 1976, the disco era was in full swing, and this period greatly influenced RuPaul's aesthetic and musical tastes. She began experimenting with gender fashion and makeup. Atlanta's underground club scene welcomed his drag performances with open arms, and it was here that he began to cement his status as an iconic drag artist.
Twenty-year-old RuPaul studied theater at Weiss University. Here she continued to develop her drag persona and learned how to create compelling stories through her performances.
