The Other Side
General Info

Location Name | The Other Side |
---|
Overview
In this metaphysical plane, supernatural beings are invisible to the living, but can observe their world, creating an aura of longing and melancholy. The inhabitants live in isolation, unable to communicate with each other and the living world, leading to a painful existence. It is a realm that the living can only disrupt through the use of dark magic or spiritual means.
However, contrary to what is believed about the spaces of purgatory, the Other Side is not immutable. Power struggles and magical forces of the Earth plane can manipulate and destabilize this dimension. Her fragility was greatly emphasized as the Other Side began to gradually disintegrate, forcing all captured beings to find their way back to the Earth plane or be exterminated. As such, The Other Side represents a compelling combination of the afterlife and exile, isolation and voyeurism; a dimension shaped and warped by the pain and obsessions of supernatural beings in the Vampire Diaries universe. More than an ethereal realm, it testifies to the idea that torture can be a constant companion even in death.
History
In this supernatural purgatory, supernatural beings were supposed to live in solitude, separated from the earthly realm, after mortal death. Unlike the afterlife, the inhabitants of the Other Side would live alone, without any prospect of peace or reincarnation.
Over the ages, the nature of the Other Side has changed. Despite being established as a Silas colony, it eventually became home to all the fallen supernatural characters. The ghosts were not only trapped, but could communicate with each other and observe the mortal world as silent spectators. In rare cases, they may come into contact with the living world under certain circumstances or during certain celestial events.
The other side underwent a massive change when the Travelers, a sub-class of witches, devised a plan to destroy it in order to eradicate the curse of immortality. Their spell, successfully executed, led to the gradual disintegration of the "Other Side". The supernatural beings associated with the realm were drawn into the dark void, awaiting an unknown fate.
The destruction of the Other Side has even caused some residents to reopen the door to the afterlife or other dimensions. But it also unleashed many vengeful spirits that had been trapped in the world for centuries, plunging the universe into chaos.
Still, The Other Side's legacy lives on as a stark reminder of the depravity and sin of supernatural beings, indeed casting a long, dark shadow over the beautiful and deadly town of Mystic Falls.
Background
The inhabitants of the afterlife were separated from the physical world, but could curiously see the events taking place, although without the ability to influence them. They lived in isolation, unable to communicate or interact with each other, making it a prison of solitude haunted by memories of their earthly lives. Although invisible to physical beings, powerful witches like Bonnie Bennett were usually able to see and communicate with them.
Over time, the other side experienced instability, sucking the ghosts into oblivion. The main cause of the Second Half's destruction was the Traveller's spells, which upset the fragile balance. The kingdom finally fell apart when Bonnie, the anchor, died, leaving many souls displaced or consigned to limbo. The tragic ending of the second half brought many supernatural beings back to the physical world and caused great chaos.
Even though she's gone, The Other Side had an indelible impact on the plot of The Vampire Diaries universe, from resurrecting characters to unleashing a great deal of chaos, and had a major impact on the future of the main characters.
