Wall Maria

General Info

Wall Maria logo
Location NameWall Maria
Wall Maria serves as the outer ring next to humanity's last bastion in the Attack on Titan universe. Massive and imposing, the wall is an impressive structure built to hold back the monstrous titans. A realm of rustic charm and pastoral beauty stands in stark contrast to the terrifying titanic reality that lies beyond. It was here that the protagonist of the series, Eren Yeager, experienced a terrible attack by the Titans that destroyed his hometown, highlighting the brutal reality of human existence in this universe. Wall Maria has several districts, each with its own unique character and contribution to human survival. Symbolizing humanity's resilience and desperate fight against extinction, Wall Maria is more than a buffer against the Titans: it is a reminder of the past, a bastion of hope and a testament to human determination.

Overview

As the outermost of the three circular walls in the Attack on Titan universe, Wall Maria plays a vital role as humanity's first line of defense against the terror of the Titans. It is the first barrier and protection for the citizens of this dystopian universe. Siena Maria spans more than 100 kilometers in diameter and includes two vital human settlements: the Shiganshina district in the southernmost part and the Utopia district.
When it was breached by the colossal and armored Titans, marking a cataclysmic event in which Eren Yeager lost his mother and adoptive parents, human civilization fell into decline. A third of humanity's territory was lost due to the collapse of this wall. It also forced more than half of the population to relocate near Wall Rose.
Despite the initial destruction, the wall symbolizes determination and perseverance as the surviving members of the Survey Corps embarked on several missions to reclaim it. This quest culminated in some of the series' most intense combat and strategic masterpieces, inspiring viewers eager to explore humanity's resilience.
Today, Wall Maria is much more than just a fortification. It symbolizes hope, courage and the undying spirit of humanity to reclaim what is rightfully theirs. Despite the understatement, Wall Maria is a solemn reminder of the indomitable human spirit.

History

The tall and regal fifty-foot-high Wall of Mary was the outermost of the three concentric walls of mankind when it was first built in 743 AD. It was built alongside Wall Rose and Wall Sina as humanity's only line of defense against the monstrous Titans. It covers an enormous area of about 480,000 square kilometers and is designed to protect and accommodate a huge mass of people.
Despite high hopes for Wall Maria's future safety, the wall was breached by the formidable Colossal Titan just a year after its creation. A breakthrough occurred in the southern district of Shiganshina and introduced the titans into the human habitat. The devastation that followed was horrific and catastrophic, with countless lives lost and mass evacuations to Wall Rose forced.
This cataclysmic event, aptly named the Fall of Maria Sienna, marked one of the darkest days in human history. The effect was absolutely devastating; almost a fifth of the people died and food supplies were severely depleted.
In 850, five years after the brutal breach, a brave group of young cadets tried in vain to retake the wall. However, their attempts were thwarted by the titans they were fighting. It was only in 850. that Wall Maria, once a symbol of human determination and resilience, has been returned to the rightful hands of humanity. After an intense and grueling war led by Commander Erwin Smith and the dedicated Survey Corps, the wall was finally retaken. The successful recapture of Wall Maria was a beacon of hope, meaning that survival and victory over the Titans was truly possible. The historical significance of Wall Maria is a reminder of humanity's resilience and march to freedom. Wall Maria still stands today, a symbol of the great struggle and immortal spirit of the human race.

Background

Wall Maria, the outermost of the three concentric walls, protected the citizens of humanity in the immersive Attack on Titan universe. As the largest wall, with a projection radius of approximately 300 miles, it was the first protective barrier against the constant threat of Titan.
The wall, built by humanity a century ago to protect against the growing threat of Titan, is named after Maria Fritz, the first king of the Elds. Life outside Wall Maria was mostly peaceful and quiet, as many citizens were unaware of the deadly dangers lurking in the outside world, believing it to be uninhabitable only due to extreme weather conditions.
Surrounding all of human civilization, Wall Maria provided a sense of security and kept life normal, fostering hope for a fearless future. The land within the border was heavily populated with both urban development and agricultural land to support the large population.
However, this refuge was destroyed when a huge colossal titan invaded Shiganshina, a suburb of Wall Maria, marking the beginning of the end of her shrine status. This cataclysmic turn led to a horrific Titan invasion that forced the inhabitants to retreat to the inner Wall Rose, irrevocably changing life as they knew it.
Even after its reconstruction, Wall Maria remains a grim reminder of the terrifying Titan War, the losses it suffered, the courage it inspired, and the indomitable drive to survive it.
