History

The position of the axis played a vital role in the complex fabric of the Gundam universe. Originally known as the 7th Moon, this asteroid was converted into a habitable object and named "Axis" after the one-year war in the United States. 0083. The axis served as a refuge for survivors who escaped from Zeon. It acted as a safe haven while the Earth Federation dominated space.
Over the next three years, the population grew due to an influx of refugees, making it a formidable force. U.C. 0087, the Axis emerged as an independent political entity under the leadership of Haman Karn. Haman used his political shrewdness and military might to tip the Axis power balance between the Earth Federation and the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG).
When the Gryps conflict began in the United States. 0087, the Axis' strategic importance and isolation proved mutually beneficial. Haman cleverly manipulated this to his advantage by demanding supplies from both sides, leaving Axis loyalties ambiguous.
Near the end of the Gryps conflict, U.C. 0088, the Axis became more powerful, and Haman's influence encompassed the remnants of Zeon. As a result, the Neo Zeon movement emerged from the Axis under Haman. The Axis then played a key role in the resulting First Neo Zeon War, which radically changed the political landscape of the Gundam universe.
Despite being blinded by his lust for power, Haman's contribution to transforming Ashi from a refuge to a powerful force in the Gundam universe remains undeniably impressive. Due to its strategic value and role in wars, the Axis has become an important place in the annals of Gundam history.

Background

Originally known as the fourth moon base in the Gundam universe, Axis has a unique background filled with political strife and tangled alliances. Located in L5 Lagrange, this massive base was built by the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War. However, the tides of war left it abandoned until it became a refuge for Zeon remnants fleeing the Earth Sphere.
A symbol of hope for Zeon loyalists, Axis was more than just a foundation, she was seen as the key to Zeon's rebirth and eventually became the basis for the creation of Neo Zeon, an important faction in Gundam history. The main driving force behind the axis' significance was Mineva Zabi, the last surviving member of the influential Zabi family. With her at the helm of Axis leadership, the place took on greater importance in Zeon's quest for autonomy.
But the base was not only a political stronghold. The Axis was equipped with an incredible arsenal, including mobile suits that could be launched in various directions, numerous bomb shelters, and a large hangar to hold massive fleets. Additionally, the asteroid base had its own extensive network of tunnels for residents to navigate and live in, with facilities such as a medical center and command center.
The final collision course with Earth, known as Operation Axis Fall, marked a turning point in the Universal Age. The intense conflict leading up to this event underscored Axis' role as a monumental place in the Gundam universe. This Axis shock, while Char Aznable's last effort to force humanity into space, exacerbated the strained relationship between Earth and the space colonies, proving that the Axis was not just a place, but a catalyst for dramatic world upheavals.
