Overview

An enigmatic and gigantic space station with an ancient history, the Citadel is the central hub of the advanced network of the Mass Effect universe. This colossal space station is of such size and complexity that it baffles even the highly advanced civilizations that inhabit it. Consisting of five massive, unsettling arms that extend outward from a potentially sprawling central ring to infinity, it is home to many different species from across the galaxy.
Its history goes back some 50,000 years; however, the mystery surrounding its origin continues to intrigue every resident. This enchanting pinnacle of engineering is believed to have been built by the Protheans, the most advanced civilization known in galactic history. Although no one knows where they disappeared to, they generously left behind valuable knowledge, including the citadel. Before revealing his destructive abilities during the Reaper invasion, he stood for peace, prosperity, and the collective strength of the interstellar community.

History

The Citadel, often referred to as the "Galactic Center," is prestigious and important in the vast Mass Effect universe. Originally created by an unknown and mysterious ancient race, the Protheans, this vast deep space station is the political, cultural and economic center of the known galaxy.
Unmatched by any existing man-made structure, this massive marvel of advanced technology is believed to be a timeless building. Its existence dates back at least 50,000 years, indicating the prosperity of the Protheans. Interestingly, the citadel has been able to survive the ravages of time, including the cyclical cataclysmic events known as the Reaper Invasion that led to the destruction of the Protheans. The station built in the Serpent Nebula was originally designed to allow its inhabitants to harness the energy of Element Zero's core to create mass effect fields. These fields helped maintain gravitational conditions within the structure similar to those of the planet's surface.
The Asari were the first modern race to discover the citadel and immediately realized the important role it could play in fostering a unified galactic community. Since then, the Citadel has been a melting pot of many civilizations and species. It has been constantly changing, growing to a population of more than 13 million. The Presidium, with its lush gardens and sparkling lakes, is the political center of the Citadel and houses embassies and diplomatic offices. A stark contrast, the Wards form the massive heart of the city, the Citadel, a melting pot where species from all corners of the galaxy live, work and play.
Despite its large population, the Citadel is not just a sprawling urban hive. It serves as the political, cultural and financial capital of the galaxy.
