Plot

Mortal Kombat follows the story of a failed MMA fighter, Cole Young, who is unsure of his origins or why Outworld Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an alien cryoman, to hunt him down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole begins a search for Sonya at the behest of Blade Jax, a Special Forces Major with the same mysterious dragon that Cole was born with.
After reaching Sonja's hideout, he soon finds himself among an elite group of fighters defending the fate of Earth in a high-profile battle against the enemies of Outworld. This group consists of the fiery Liu Kang, the brutal Kung Lao and the unscrupulous mercenary Kano. Trained by Lord Raiden, the god of war, and protected by the Temple of the Old Gods, the team fights to gain the strength and skills needed to defeat interdimensional foes in the ultimate Mortal Kombat. As the fighting rages, Kol discovers the power of his inner Beyond, a phenomenal force from his soul, in time to not only save his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all. The plot unfolds as a whirlwind of brutal action, unbelievable twists and epic power struggles, leaving every viewer biting their nails till the very end. Production

The development of Mortal Kombat was a huge undertaking involving an international team of filmmakers, artists and stunt professionals. From 2019 production began in South Australia, chosen for its versatile landscapes that could convincingly double as multiple game locations.
Determined to stay true to the game's essence, director Simon McQuoid recruited an effective cast capable of handling the demands of the intense, physical roles. A large part of the budget and shooting schedule was devoted to the battle scenes, ensuring that they were as exciting and authentic as possible. The filmmakers worked closely with stunt coordinators and fight choreographers from the video game industry to create the signature moves Fatalities fans have come to expect. Production designer Naaman Marshall and his team created dazzling sets that truly brought the outside world and terrestrial realm to life, using practical effects wherever possible to add realism.
