Overview
A plane in the Magic: The Gathering universe, Innistrad is a realm shrouded in darkness, danger, and mystery. It's a gothic world where humanity is besieged by horrors lurking in the shadows. The moon is low and high in the sky, its eerie, steady gaze casting a diffused light across the conflict-torn landscape. Divided into four provinces, each unique in its territory and the horrors it hides.
Gavony, the central province, is the heart of human civilization - the famous walled city of Traben and its cathedral, a beacon of spiritual leadership. Isolated and rugged, Kessig is a kingdom of forests and wildlife, while distant Stensia is a mountainous region ruled by vampires in abandoned mansions. The desolate province of Nephalia is a maze of winding waterways, shrouded in darkness and teeming with goblins and necromancers.
The people of Innistrad shelter under the protection of the Church of Avacyn, named after the archangel Avacyn, patron of mankind. The Church and its clergy provide shelter and guidance to their flock, using divine magic to keep the darkness at bay. Yet the barrier between humans and the supernatural rests on a fragile peace, tested by rising waves of horrific horrors. The innate nature of its inhabitants, societal fear, and supernatural dangers combine to make Innistrad a world of survival, where only the brave or desperate venture into the unsettling darkness beyond the safety of the church.
History
Considered one of the fascinating realms of Magic: The Gathering Cosmos, Innistrad has a history steeped in darkness and thriving on horror.
Set in a universe defined by the tropes of the horror genre, Innistrado's story revolves around a cosmic battle between humans and a host of supernatural enemies. The setting betrays a gothic touch and exudes a dichotomy of horror and heroism.
Centuries ago, Archangel Avacyn, protector of humanity and symbol of hope, was born from the spell of the planeswalker Sorin Markov. Avacyn and her angel of flight fought relentlessly to protect humanity, maintaining the delicate balance between the humans and the dark denizens. However, the image of peace was suddenly shattered when Avacyn mysteriously disappeared. His absence plunged Innistrad into an age of despair and chaos. As darkness enveloped the kingdom, humans had to defend themselves against their supernatural enemies. This period, known as "The Curser," was marked by growing fear and fading hope.
At the Battle of Traben, Avacyn reappeared and restored order, ushering in the extraordinary era of the Blessed Sleep. Unfortunately, the peace was temporary. Avacyn showed signs of madness and Innistrad was once again in danger. Sorin was forced to destroy his creation Avacyn, ushering in a new age known as Shadows over Innistrad.
After Avacyn's death, Emrakul, another Titan Planeswalker, invaded Innistrad and wreaked havoc on the realm. The Spectral Moon, one of the most catastrophic events in Innistrad, is a testament to Emrakul's damaging influence.
The resilient people clung to survival, their faith in Avacyn's return unwavering. While Innistrad's history is littered with periods of darkness and despair, it is also a testament to the indomitable spirit of humanity. For the inhabitants of this gothic setting, each twist in their fate, each era of their history brings anticipation for what lies around the bend.
Background
Innistrad is a world where an ominous moon hangs in the multicolored night sky and casts its eerie glow across forested landscapes dotted with isolated villages, meandering rivers and towering mountains. The world captures a lingering darkness, ranging from the vast desert to the winding streets of ancient and eerie cities. Residents face a never-ending struggle for survival against horrors such as merciless werewolves, persuasive devils, terrifying ghosts, deadly vampires, and the most terrifying and persistent terror, the unknown.
Despite these adversities, the citizens of Innistrad have devised ways to protect their homes through the use of protective walls and symbols, religious rituals, and culinary practices passed down from generation to generation. The church of Avacyn, the guardian angel who lived there, provided a glimmer of hope against the encroaching darkness. However, the disappearance of Avacyn and the commotion of the prophetic cryptoliths have caused terrible confusion among the people.
Intrepid adventurers journeying to Innistrad must traverse a perilous wilderness, brave ghostly marshes, avoid the enticing whispers of ghostly suffocating swamps, and endure the gusty noises emanating from the forest. Gateways to mysterious places like sinister Stensia and grim Gavony lead to tales of many horrors, proving that it's rarely safe to travel alone in a single night in Innistrad.
The rich tapestry of this world includes proud and enduring people; noble vampires with great intelligence and refined taste; elusive werewolves who embody brute force and insatiable hunger; and ghostly specters whose bitter tales echo in the hollows. Few would choose Innistrad as their home, but its inhabitants are inextricably linked to their terrifying land. Every aspect of Innistrad, from the complex story to the eerie landscapes, draws heavily on Gothic horror, creating a chilling yet immersive world where fear unwittingly invades everyday life. In the midst of a cycle of death and rebirth, the inevitable dread is an undeniable part of its enduring appeal.
