Overview
Mysterious, misty forests and eternal twilight make navigation difficult, constantly reminding that this is no place for people. Known for its chaotic and violent nature, Purgatory is more than just a place; it's a battlefield. The inhabitants rarely coexist peacefully, but fiercely fight for survival.
Despite its oppressive desolation, Purgatory has a kind of wild beauty. Dark but beautiful, it often challenged and redefined alliances. Survival here depends on wits, strength, and often the fragile bonds that are formed with others.
For the supernatural fan, purgatory is an intriguing, if dangerous, aspect of the universe's rich history. A place of purification and struggle, it challenges even the strongest character, making it an unforgettable part of the daring adventures the series offers.
History
The history of purgatory goes back to the beginning of creation. It was designed by God to be the eternal resting place of monsters, an area of detention and punishment, parallel to heaven and hell, for humans and demons respectively. The most evil creatures are said to be trapped in purgatory from which they cannot harm humans.
The ancient being Eva, known as the mother of all monsters, is said to have come from purgatory and somehow escaped to Earth, where she began creating various monstrous species. His imprisonment in purgatory was a turning point in his history.
A former tenant of Purgatory was Dean Winchester, an expert supernatural hunter who was trapped there at the end of season seven along with vampire Benny. They formed an unlikely alliance to find a way out. The Leviathan, the first divine beings, were also imprisoned in Purgatory until they were released.
In season 8, it was discovered that Purgatory has a door to Earth. This gate can be opened, but only from the Earth side and closes at dawn. This allowed Dean and Benny to escape, marking the second known escape from Purgatory.
For centuries, Purgatory has not only been a terrifying realm of hideous creatures, but also played a crucial role in shaping the events of the supernatural universe. Tradition often returns to history to remind us of the dire consequences of disturbing the cosmic balance.
Background
It is a completely separate dimension from earth and heaven. Depicted as an endless forest shrouded in bluish-gray darkness, it embodies the bleak wilderness to which its inhabitants are doomed. Time passes differently here; a fact that makes escape or planned missions difficult.
Purgatory was created by God to imprison leviathans, magnificent creatures that could devour anything in their path. God feared that the leviathans would ravage the earth, so purgatory became their eternal prison. Over the centuries, many other monsters were thrown into Purgatory, further cementing its reputation.
Although this is essentially a predatory domain, surprising alliances can sometimes be formed in order to survive. You must always be careful because in purgatory everyone is prey and predator. However, rescues are sometimes made through "Guardian Rituals", a possible but dangerous escape route back to Earth.
In the existential dread of the supernatural universe, purgatory represents a never-ending struggle—an eternal purgatory of survival against eternal danger. He might not be able to handle the blazing flames of hell, but he's just as scary, if not more so. He constantly reminds us that being in purgatory is the epitome of a never-ending nightmare.
