Overview
Each apostle varies in appearance and purpose, from humanoid abominations to monstrous behemoths, each a monstrous embodiment of their sacrificed humanity. What unites them is great strength and speed, resistance to deadly weapons and the insane hunger of the human body. But despite their demonic transformations, many of the apostles retain traces of their flawed human nature, making them intriguingly complex and tragically twisted characters. Free from human moral bonds, but not entirely without compassion, the apostles occupy an unsettling space between man and monster. They are formidable opponents for the protagonist Guts as he seeks to challenge the Divine Hand and the layers of darkness and despair they represent. The fight against the apostles is nothing less than a deep fight against the darkest aspects of humanity and the unspeakable horrors caused by the pursuit of human power.
History
These beings were once ordinary humans who, driven to despair, used a tool known as the Behelite to summon the Divine Hand, a group of five demonic beings that control causation and destiny. In exchange for an offering normally given to them by a loved one, the Divine Hand granted them incredible powers, causing them to mutate into demonic beings known as Apostles.
After receiving their otherworldly powers, the apostles wrote a history of fear and terror among the people. With their newfound power, they wielded a terrifying power and made the common people cower in both fear and awe. Their ability to easily possess common people has kept them terrorized and dominated for centuries.
But not all apostles have the same purpose. Some retreat from humanity, overcome with guilt and regret, while others continue to indulge in bloody carnage. There are those who chose to serve Griffith, the fifth member of the Divine Hand, following his dream of establishing a utopian kingdom. But their common ancestry and the great powers they have been given unite these apostles into a grotesque brotherhood. Throughout the series, they continue to influence the world of BERSERK with their ambitions, creating both triumph and disaster. Their story is a magnificent tapestry woven from their individual stories of loss, sacrifice and power-hungry satisfaction, painting a harrowing picture of the price of unparalleled strength and immortality.
