Overview
The capital, Tretogoras, is an impressive fortress, the grandeur of which is unmatched in the entire empire. The magnificent Redanian armada, anchored in Oxenfurt harbor, completes its military prowess. Known for its disciplined military and intelligence on par with the infamous Nilfgaardian secret service, Redania is a force to be reckoned with.
Redan culture is based on education, symbolism and diplomacy. The University of Oxenfurt, where people from all over the continent come to study, is an example of this. Meanwhile, the Redan monarchy has always been a staunch patron of the arts, adding a touch of sophistication to its influential political position.
Redania also plays a vital role in the politics of the Northern Kingdoms, often seen at the forefront of the fight against Nilfgaard. A remarkably diverse society, slyly intriguing politics and memorable characters, this is a region that offers endless adventures and stories. The Kingdom of Redania is truly a jewel in the Wizarding World, victorious and domineering yet wonderfully charming.
History
The origins of Redania can be traced back to the First Landing, a major event that took place in 760 AD when humans first arrived on the continent. Settlers led by Jan Bekker and other wizards founded Redania, named after the river that runs through the land. Redania originally began as a principality ruled by the Northern Kingdom, and it wasn't until the reign of Vestibor Superb that Redania was finally recognized as a kingdom after a victory over Aedirn. Redania enjoyed its golden age under King Vizimir II, aptly known as the Judge. Under his rule, Redania prospered, experiencing a booming economy and military power. However, the country's success was short-lived when Vizimir II was assassinated, leading to chaos and instability in Redania. His death caused a succession dispute between his two sons, Radovid V and Dalimira, which further weakened Redania's status in the northern kingdoms.
Redania played a major role in the northern wars against the Nilfgaardian Empire. Under the leadership of Radovid V, known as Stern, Redania emerged victorious and became one of the most powerful kingdoms in the north. But the victory was bittersweet, as Radovid V, driven by paranoia and suspicion, initiated a brutal witch hunt and spoke strongly against magic and non-human races, casting a shadow over Redania's victory.
Today, Redania is a formidable force in the northern realm, bearing the scars of its tumultuous past, reflecting the indomitable spirit of its people, and continuing to play an important role in shaping the continent's history.
Background
Redania is known for its complex politics, with many powerful actors vying for power. King Radovid V, also known as "the hard one", rules with an iron fist and enforces any opposition to his obsession with magic and its eradication, leading to unstable relations with the local sorceresses.
The population, though ravaged by the chaos of war, demonstrates resilience, pragmatism and perseveres despite various occupation forces. The local economy thrives on trade, especially in Novigrad, an important center for merchants and artisans, despite the city's strained ties to the Redan Monarchy.
But for all its strength, Redania is a center of dark intrigue, and its spy network is the Redan Secret Service, fearsomely infamous across the continent. Žygimantas Dijkstra, the spymaster, orchestrates the deception with diplomatic subtlety, making Redania an important player on the political chessboard of the continent.
Redania is not just about politics; it is steeped in rich culture. Architecture ranges from humble homesteads built into the ground to majestic fortresses, and the University of Oxenfurt is a beacon of knowledge and learning. Against a backdrop of war, political maneuvering, secret schemes, and cultural grandeur, the history of Redania in the Witcher universe is fascinating, offering a nuanced mix of strength, resilience, and intrigue.
