Overview
Northrend features a diverse environment that allows adventurers to explore many different landscapes. The lush, expansive vegetation of Howling Fjord and the crystalline beauty that hides the deadly dangers of Crystalsong Forest contrast sharply with the cold bleakness of Dragonblight or the plague-infested landscapes of the Boreal Tundra.
This frozen continent was once the unrelenting battlefield between the Alliance, the Horde, and the Scourge during the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. Despite the harsh climate and merciless enemies, many have ventured into the hostile land of Northrend to discover its secrets, hunt for legendary treasures, and face the chilling menace that lurks within its frozen heart.
But Northrend isn't all about his pains. Culture also thrives in these cold wastes, from the great titanic city of Ulduar, home to the baffling mystery of the Old Gods, to the lost secrets of the Tuskarr and the magnificent blue ethereal wonder of the majestic blue dragon in Koldara.
Northrend is a place of wondrous wonders and hidden dangers, a testament to the spirit of adventure that drives every World of Warcraft explorer. Join their ranks and gaze upon the frozen north.
History
Northrend was home to the vrykul, a once proud race that was horrified by the weakness of its children. To prevent their kin from being tainted by their perceived vulnerability, they cryogenically suspended these "creeping" children beneath the vast frozen plains of the region. Vrykul weakened and finally fell into a deep sleep, waiting for the signal to wake up again.
During the Third War, Prince Arth Menethil traveled from Lordaeron to Northrend, succumbing to the whispers of the cursed sword Frostmourne. There, driven by an insatiable desire for power, he merged with the spirit of the orc shaman Ner'zhul and became the Lich King. The Lich King and his scourge army have turned the once peaceful lands into a fortress of ice and death. The native races and creatures became his pawns, deepening the darkness that had fallen upon Northrend. But the land of permafrost was not left to the malice of the Lich King. Realizing the immense threat, the Horde and the Alliance waged a brutal war against the Lich King and his scourge. The tides of war came and went, but eventually the Lich King ended up deep in Northrend, the Glacier Citadel.
Although the ghost of the Lich King no longer haunts Northrend, it remains a testament to the indomitable will of its inhabitants and a dark and legendary past. A land of harsh winters and unforgiving history, Northrend continues to defy all odds, a testament to Azeroth's strength and resilience.
Background
Northrend's hostile conditions and diverse landscapes reflect its difficult history. From towering snowy mountains to arctic tundra and dense magical forests, the journey through Northrend is both dangerous and exciting. The continent is divided into several zones, each with its own unique environment and challenges. The most famous area is Icecrown, the lair of the Lich King.
The continent has been the epicenter of many events in the game universe. It saw the rise and fall of Arthas as he became the Lich King, and was also the battleground for the Horde's original final battle with the Alliance in Warcraft II. The lives of its few inhabitants are shaped by the history of Northrend, and notable races such as the Taunka, Tuskarr, and determined frost dwarves dare to survive the unforgiving conditions.
Northrend holds the secrets of primordial giants and forgotten gods, causing explorers to fear and wonder. It contains the ancient city of Ulduar, a testament to Titan heritage, and the vile prison of the ancient god Yogg-Saron.
Stormy nature and chaotic backgrounds contrast with breathtaking landscapes and ruins of ancient civilizations. The rugged yet mysteriously alluring atmosphere of Northrend embodies the unrelenting conflict of life and death, making it a memorable place in the World of Warcraft setting.
