Overview

History
Northrend was home to the vrykul, a once proud race that was horrified by the weakness of its children. To prevent their kin from being tainted by their perceived vulnerability, they cryogenically suspended these "creeping" children beneath the vast frozen plains of the region. Vrykul weakened and finally fell into a deep sleep, waiting for the signal to wake up again.
During the Third War, Prince Arth Menethil traveled from Lordaeron to Northrend, succumbing to the whispers of the cursed sword Frostmourne. There, driven by an insatiable desire for power, he merged with the spirit of the orc shaman Ner'zhul and became the Lich King. The Lich King and his scourge army have turned the once peaceful lands into a fortress of ice and death. The native races and creatures became his pawns, deepening the darkness that had fallen upon Northrend. But the land of permafrost was not left to the malice of the Lich King. Realizing the immense threat, the Horde and the Alliance waged a brutal war against the Lich King and his scourge. The tides of war came and went, but eventually the Lich King ended up deep in Northrend, the Glacier Citadel.
Although the ghost of the Lich King no longer haunts Northrend, it remains a testament to the indomitable will of its inhabitants and a dark and legendary past. A land of harsh winters and unforgiving history, Northrend continues to defy all odds, a testament to Azeroth's strength and resilience.
Background
Northrend's hostile conditions and diverse landscapes reflect its difficult history.
