Taking inspiration from parts of California and Nevada, the game's setting included three different cities, each modeled after real-life locations: Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas became Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas, respectively. It was the first of the series and set a new benchmark for open world gaming. The development team did extensive fieldwork in Los Angeles to capture the game's environment, taking photographs and sketches to meticulously transform the sprawling cityscapes into a concise but detailed equivalent.
